The Sekumpul Waterfall
The Sekumpul Waterfall

Bali lies 3.2 km east of Java, separated by the Bali Strait. Bali is approximately 153 km wide and is about 112 km long. Mount Agung (3,031 m) is the highest point of Bali with the central mountains reaching up over 2,000 metres. It also has active volcanoes such as Mount Agung and Mount Batur. Due to the volcanic activity Bali has exceptionally fertile soils. The longest river is the Ayung River and is around 75 km long.

Surrounded by coral reefs the island has beautiful white sand beaches to the south and volcanic black sand beaches to the north and west. Bali has no major waterways, although the Ho River is navigable by small sampan boats.

The largest city is Denpasar near the south coast. Singaraja is the second largest city.

Three small islands lie to the immediate south-east and all are administratively part of the Klungkung regency of Bali: Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, separated from Bali by the Badung Strait. To the east, the Lombok Strait separates Bali from Lombok.

Just a few degrees south of the equator, Bali has a fairly even climate all year round. Average year-round temperature stands at around 30 °C.

Bali has monsoon rainfall, particularly from December to March.
